The move is part of the Defense Department’s command network vision for information sharing.
The U.S. Navy is preparing to deploy a carrier strike group in 2023 as part of the Pentagon’s Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JAD2C). Undersecretary of the Navy Erik Raven announced the implementation of advanced networking being developed under the secretive Project Overmatch, which promises to deploy seamless information sharing and even faster cross-service threat responses into the system as early as next year.
Cross-service JADC2 integration has been an expressed concern of both the House and the Pentagon in the last two months, and this operation hopes to address those concerns.
“You probably don’t hear a lot of details about what’s going on behind the curtain,” said Undersecretary Raven. “But really what this has to do with is matching up Navy innovation and Navy technologies.”
Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Michael Gilday stated, “What we’re aiming for and we’ve actually had a lot of success with is developing a network of networks that allows us to transfer any data over any network. So it’s a software-defined communication, communication-as-a-service framework, where software actually decides what that prioritized information is and what’s the best path it should take to get to a decision maker.”
